The United Nations World Academy of Ecological Sciences was initiated in the 2020s under the joint framework of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Secretariat. The first academicians were composed of top ecological scientists from 23 countries.
The organization follows the United Nations Charter and is guided by the United Nations Economic and Social Council. Its achievements are widely applied to various sustainable development agendas within the United Nations system.
Academician represents the highest scholarly honor conferred by the UNWAES in recognition of transformative contributions to ecological sciences and sustainable development. All Academicians are elected through a rigorous peer-nomination and selection process.
