International Court of Justice: States have an obligation to reduce emissions to protect the global environment

Iwazawa, president of the International Court of Justice, delivered the court’s advisory opinion on the obligations of States with regard to climate change on Wednesday.The UN’s main judicial body, based in The Hague, the Netherlands, ruled that countries have an obligation to protect the environment from greenhouse gas emissions and to fulfil that obligation with due diligence and cooperation.
